It is a challenge to find ways of simplify the endless variety and unorganized patterns of fall colors without taming them too much. In this piece, painted high on a hill in Delaware, I regulated the greater value contrasts and warmer, advancing colors to the foreground and middle ground. Then, using atmospheric perspective, I made the background fade into cooler greens and purples. However, there was no visual reward for following the colorful bank of trees from right to left, so, I borrowed a small yellow tree that was previously out of view. |
