Growing up in south eastern Pennsylvania has naturally infused my pastel palette with this areas seasonal color variations. The region is not overtly dramatic or showy; it requires a sensitive eye and patient spirit in order to appreciate its beauty year round. From the subtle and sophisticated neutrals of winter to the endless variety of greens in summer, I always look forward to these transitions because they encourage me to experiment with color. In addition to its visual variety, this area possesses a wealth of history that supports my artistic efforts. Numerous internationally renowned artists and illustrators have lived and worked in this region, including N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Thomas Eakins and Mary Cassat, to name a few. The influence these giants of the art world have had on my work is significant, and I am proud to be a small part of the tradition they forged. Donna Neithammer Cusano |
I cut my teeth as a plein air painter here and am now quite spoiled by the region's mild and inviting weather, not to mention the quiet beauty. There exists here a certain amount of atmospheric stability that makes the seasonal turnovers rather predictable. Therefore, I can anticipate revisiting these cyclical palettes and the resulting work which I may have abandoned earlier. As I grow as an artist, repeated visits to my favorite places reveal them anew to me, and I am inspired by them yet again. |
