Painted in a small cove near Cape Elizabeth, Maine, this image captures the dramatic tidal shifts along this jagged coast. The water receded nearly seventy yards within the hour I took to create the sketch for this larger work, later completed in the studio. The oceans constant advance and retreat has sculpted these linear formations, ideal elements that visually lead the eye back toward the distant islands and the horizon beyond them. This is one of my very favorite places. Off the beaten path and little known to tourists, it provides a sanctuary for refilling the well of the spirit. |
